MAP mima Portfolio: Sea Through Sound

Nick Wilkinson is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist working across projection, sound, photography and immersive installation. His practice is rooted in the belief that creativity can serve as a bridge reconnect with nature, with each other, and with ourselves.

For over a decade, Nick has explored how sensory experiences can shift emotional states. As a DJ and music producer, he’s spent years learning how people move, physically and emotionally in response to sound. As an underwater photographer, he’s captured the quiet power of the ocean, witnessing both its beauty and its fragility. And as a projection artist, he weaves these worlds together to create spaces that are reflective, immersive, and emotionally resonant.

Nick has exhibited at The Other Art Fair, Ocean Lovers Festival, Goodspace Gallery, and The Maritime Museum, with his projects raising awareness and funding for climate-related charities including Underwater Earth and The Cooks River Mudcrabs. His recent work includes immersive exhibitions like Memory Waves, Ticket to the Coastline, Tidal Traces and Saving Scapes.

Check out a recap of Saving Scapes below.

Dive in deeper!

  • Ticket to the Coastline

I want to bridge the gap between the fleeting joy of dancing at your favourite concert and the often underappreciated value of the ocean. To achieve this, I created an immersive experience that fuses the euphoria of music with the visceral beauty of the ocean.

  • Memory Waves

Memory Waves is an audio visual experience that explores the themes of AI, sound, nostalgia and nature. Throughout the show my memories, of being drenched in ocean waves and sound waves, blend together to ask the question. How real is your nostalgia and does that even matter?

  • Tidal Traces

You've heard of generative AI but have you heard of generative action? This involves the physical behaviours that promote the well-being of future generations. Tidal Traces explores the art between AI and what's left of our natural world. Let’s leave our future generations with a world as beautiful as we've captured here.
